OPENING OF 5-KILOMETER MOTORWAY SECTION BIJAČA-KRAVICE

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new five-kilometre motorway was held today. Head of the FBiH Motorways Ensad Karić and the FBiH Prime Minister, Nermin Nikšić, officially opened the new motorway subsection Bijača-Kravice, along with ten kilometres of reconstructed regional roads R424 and R423.

The construction works took 20 months at the cost of 56 million KM. This marks the successful completion of another project which employed domestic companies, ŽGP and Hidrogradnja, and the consortium leader Euro-Asfalt Sarajevo. The Bijača-Kravice subsection also included the construction of the Bijača border crossing.

Karić stated that the Bijača border crossing was entirely funded from the company’s coffers, and was completed ahead of schedule. Karić announced that the official opening of the border crossing would take place the following week.

He underlined that the FBiH Motorways are pushing forwards with the construction of modern motorways in BiH. “If the current pace is maintained, our country, and its citizens, will have 102 kilometres of new motorways at their disposal by the end of 2014,” Karić stressed. The FBiH Motorways managed to save six million KM on this project, and these funds were reinvested in the development of local communities. “This project brings honour to us all,” Nikšić said.

On behalf of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian consortium, Euro-Asfalt Sarajevo CEO Hamed Ramić expressed his gratitude to all partners involved in the project, adding that the construction process involved state-of-the-art building equipment. “With this project, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian civil engineering sector has gained the necessary references which will make domestic companies more competitive on foreign markets,” Ramić concluded.

Head of Ljubuški Municipality Nevenko Barbarić elaborated that the local administration has been involved in the implementation of the project since its inception. He underlined the economic importance of this motorway, having in mind that the country as a whole, as well as his municipality, is in need of jobs and investments. He expressed gratitude to CEO Karić for recognizing the needs of the local community by building ten kilometres of modern regional roads, thus improving the quality of roads leading towards the motorway and the border.

Apart from the five-kilometre motorway, the Bijača-Kravice subsection also included two flyovers, three underpasses, a traffic control centre, a frontal toll station, and the Kravice resting area. The motorway will be open for traffic as of next week, when the official opening of the Bijača border crossing is planned.

RECONSTRUCTION OF STUP JUNCTION BEGINS IN JUNE

The signing of the agreement on the construction of urban thoroughfares in Sarajevo marks the official launch of the expansion and renovation of the 12th Transverse Road stretching from the Stup Junction to the inter-entity boundary line. The first stage of the project envisions the rehabilitation of the Stup Junction, which is currently the most congested road junction in Sarajevo Canton.

The agreement was signed by Sarajevo Canton Prime Minister Suad Zeljković, Transport and Communications Minister Jusuf Bubica, Head of the Sarajevo Canton Road Directorate Adem Zolj, and the CEOs of Euro-Asfalt and ŽGP, Hamed Ramić and Asim Nanić respectively. These two companies will be in charge of the construction works. The ceremony was also attended by head of the Sarajevo Office of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Libor Krkoška, on behalf of the project’s creditor.

The total length of the reconstructed road is 900 metres. The total cost of the project is 21,725,514 KM. The construction should commence in the second half of June, and the time for completion is 12 months.

Construction will begin from the bridge on the river Miljacka. A new two-lane carriageway will be added to the present road, along with a viaduct which will be included in the Stup Junction. Currently the junction has a single-carriageway overpass. The new carriageway will be built next to the old one. Ultimately the junction is supposed to have two lanes for traffic moving from Briješće towards Trnovo, and two lanes leading from the Airport towards Briješće. Two additional slip roads will be built. One of them will be located next to the Stup bus terminal. The other one will streamline traffic from the Airport towards the city centre. Zolj explained that this will help speed up the traffic flow through the junction. According to him, the key segment of the project is the construction of two 200-metre pedestrian underpasses with access escalators beneath the junction. The underpasses will have access from both sides of the main longitudinal road and from the tram stops. Four 200-metre underpasses will be built in total.

Minister Bubica stated that, with the completion of this project, the Stup Junction will become a modern traffic intersection that will improve the traffic flow in this part of the city. The reconstruction, he explained, will alleviate the main bottleneck between Stup and Rajlovac, thus also improving the link between the 5c Corridor and the city. Prime Minister Zeljković argued that this is the beginning of an important project led by the Sarajevo Canton authorities with the aim of improving the overall traffic flow. “The time is right for valuable projects in Sarajevo, to launch endeavours that will inspire others to continue their implementation,” he added.

During the construction works, limited traffic will be allowed in this part of the road grid. Talks are under way on finding the best traffic regulation model. The public will be notified about the chosen solution in due course.

TUNEL VIJENAC - II FAZA

VIJENAC TUNNEL – STAGE 2

Preparations for the Stage 2 of construction works on the Vijenac Tunnel are under way. Euro-Asfalt is leading the consortium which has been tasked with waterproofing, building of the secondary concrete lining and the surface road, and partial installation of the electronic tunnel infrastructure. The time for completion is 12 months. Vijenac is a twin-tube tunnel roughly 2,950 metres in length. It will be the longest tunnel in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The tunnel’s design complies with the latest industrial standards, and it will be one of the leading tunnels when it comes to safety measures and equipment. Currently the work is focused on the erection of formwork on the southern side, as well as the installation of drainage and waterproofing systems. The equipment used is designed specifically for tunnel construction. It includes complex mechanical shores and formwork that are mounted on rail tracks and can be moved as the work progresses.

AGREEMENT ON STAGE 2 OF VIJENAC TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION SIGNED

CEOs of FBiH Motorways, Euro-Asfalt and GP, Ensad Karić, Hamed Ramić and Asim Nanić respectively, signed a construction agreement worth 47.73 million KM. FBiH Minister of Transport and Communications Enver Bijedić joined as a co-signatory. The project is expected to last 12 months, after which the motorway connecting Sarajevo and Zenica shall be complete.

FBiH Motorways CEO Ensad Karić stated that the Tunnel “1st of March” represents a successful joint endeavour between the FBiH Motorways and domestic companies. He added that, following the completion of Stage 2, this will be the longest tunnel in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and one of the most technologically advanced tunnels in the region. The tunnel itself is currently one of the most challenging structures on the 5c Corridor.

Karić noted that, thanks to this project, in 12 months the citizens will finally have a direct motorway link between Sarajevo and Zenica. He especially underlined the fact that domestic companies are engaged in this project, which will provide them with an importance reference for the future.

Karić explained that, during talks with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the FBiH Motorways negotiated equal treatment for domestic companies. He noted that 20% of the total cost will be covered by liquidated damages. With this agreement, the total value of investments in the past 20 months has exceeded one billion KM.

“Let me extend my congratulations to Euro-Asfalt and GP. I wish them success, and I am sure we shall meet again here in 12 months to open the tunnel, as well as the completed Sarajevo-Zenica motorway,” Karić added. Euro-Asfalt CEO Hamed Ramić stated that this agreement proves domestic construction companies are capable of handling even the most challenging projects. Such projects can further contribute to the economic recovery of Bosnia and Herzegovina. FBiH Minister of Transport and Communications Enver Bijedić underlined that the construction works on the Tunnel “1st of March” (Vijenac Tunnel) are progressing ahead of schedule thanks to the commitment of the FBiH Motorways.

Zenica-Doboj Canton Prime Minister Fikret Plevljak stated: “Projects such as this one help to restore hope and confidence among Bosnians and Herzegovinians in our own ability to build a better future together.” The FBiH Prime Minister, Nermin Nikšić, added that the integration prospects for Bosnia and Herzegovina rely on the construction of road links which are doing a better job connecting people and the entire BiH than the politicians are. The final breakthrough of the Vijenac Tunnel (Tunnel “1st of March”) was accomplished on the Independence Day, the 1st of March, 2013. This marked the completion of Stage 1 along the entire length of the tunnel. A consortium of Euro-Asfalt Sarajevo and ŽGP Sarajevo has been selected, following the evaluation of received bids, for the Stage 2 of the Tunnel “1st of March”. The tender criteria were defined in a way to provide equal treatment to domestic companies. The Stage 2 of the Tunnel “1st of March” construction project envisions waterproofing, drainage, secondary shoring, paving of the road surface, and electrical wiring.

The deadline for completion of the project is March 2014. After that, the entire motorway section Drivuša-Kakanj, i.e. the Sarajevo-Zenica motorway, will be complete.
