SLOVENIA: TUNNEL BREAKTHROUGH CEREMONY (17 NOVEMBER)

A ceremony was held today in Gruškovje (on the Croatian-Slovenian border) to mark the final breakthrough of the left tube of Log tunnel. The tunnel is part of the Section IIa of the 5.77 kilometres long Draženci-Gruškovje motorway, which is being built by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian company Euro-Asfalt. The ceremony was attended by senior officials, representatives of municipal authorities, and the investor, Motorway Company of the Republic of Slovenia (DARS).

The construction agreement for this section was signed in April. The project envisions the construction of carriageways, an area designated for the Gruškovje border crossing, Zakl slip road, area designated for installation of silos, the aligning of local and regional roads, building of sound barriers and landscaping work. It also includes the construction of a twin-tube tunnel, three flyovers, one underpass, eight bridges, 14 culverts and 19 retaining walls.

It is part of the Slovenian tradition for such buildings to have a godparent. In keeping with this tradition, the godmother of Log is Darinka Kodrič, manager of a nearby farm and tourist hotspot in Žetale Municipality. Kodrič presented the Project Manager Zdenko Bojić with a statuette of St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners.

In his address, Bojić expressed hope that the project’s pace will be maintained, and that there will be no major setbacks. Most importantly, he added, the construction should continue without any accidents or injuries. Euro-Asfalt CEO Hamed Ramić underlined the significance of this tunnel, not only in terms of its length and complexity, but also because this is the first tunnel (the total length of both tubes, including portals, is 250 meters) his company is building in the European Union.

“Today we are celebrating the breakthrough of one tunnel tube. The other one will follow suit within a week. This project is not overly challenging to our company, as we have been involved in more complex projects. But it means a great deal to us in the sense of meeting the deadlines and the high standards required in this market,” Ramić said. Member of DARS Management, Vili Žavrlan, express his satisfaction with the progress made so far, adding expectations that the entire section will be opened by the end of 2018 as planned.

SLOVENIA: SIGNING OF AGREEMENT WORTH 15 MILLION KM

A construction agreement was signed at the Slovenian Motorway Company’s (DARS) headquarters in Ljubljana, officially awarding a construction project worth 15 million KM to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian company Euro-Asfalt Ltd. from Sarajevo. The construction is expected to begin within 28 days.

The project envisions the initial construction stages of the A4 motorway section between Slivnica and Gruškovje border crossing, subsection AC Draženci-MMP Gruškovje, Stage IIb. Euro-Asfalt stated that this agreement serves as further proof of BiH companies’ worth in international markets.

After signing the agreement, Euro-Asfalt CEO Hamed Ramić stated: “Euro-Asfalt has already entered many foreign markets, and we are grateful to the investors for recognizing our abilities. We hope that our cooperation with Slovenia will continue beyond this project. Our idea is to kick-start the construction sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. We hope that our initiative for a merging of large regional companies will be met with approval and that very soon we will be able, as a strong consortium, to enter biddings for large projects not only in the region, but also globally. This primarily applies to the Middle East, where there is a great shortage of construction companies.”

Head of DARS Management Matjaž Knez stated that he expects from Euro-Asfalt the proper application of environmental and professional standards, high-quality output and, if possible, the completion of construction works ahead of schedule.

The time for completion of the project is 12 months.

5C CORRIDOR MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION – SVILAJ-ODŽAK UPDATE

The project envisions the construction of 5c Corridor motorway section Svilaj-Odžak. The length of the section is 5.6 kilometres, along with 4.5 kilometres of access roads. The motorway passes through an area of weak natural formation. For this reason, the prefabricated deep foundation technology will be used for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The total length of inserted piles exceeds 1.6 million metres. The Svilaj-Odžak section also includes two underpasses, two flyovers, one wildlife crossing and two bridges, Potočani and Odžak.

Only the first stage of construction has been completed so far, having in mind that the road is being built on weak soil. The next stage will involve consolidation of the embankment, as well as the compressible formation soil which is affected by its own weight. Geomechanical analyses have concluded that it will take 15 months for proper consolidation, after which the second stage – i.e. the paving of upper layers of the motorway – can begin. The construction is expected to resume in March 2017, and the second stage should be completed by the end of the 2017 construction season.

Despite the poor weather conditions, high concentration of groundwater, and weak formation soil unsuitable for motorway or building construction, the project is proceeding according to set schedule.
